802.11a At The Expense Of 802.11G?

The FCC recently proposed to add 255MHz (nearly 80 percent) to the available bandwidth of IEEE 802.11a radios. This new spectrum would reside in the 5.470GHZ to 5.725GHz range. The net result would be an increase in the available channels for 802.11a from 11 to 24. By adding this middle band, 802.11a products produced in the United States will be able to operate in Europe, which accepts this middle band.

The net impact of the FCC proposal is to make it much more likely that 802.11a products will soar in popularity both in Europe and in the United States. This success is likely to be at the expense of 802.11g products.
